Challenge

Justin, an Australian music composer, sound designer, and audio wizard, needed a digital home that didn’t just showcase his work — it had to sound and feel like him. The goal was to craft a cinematic, atmospheric portfolio that drew visitors into his world through storytelling, sound, and sensory immersion.

Solution

I designed and developed a website built around audio and interactivity. To capture Justin’s signature style, his music plays as a looping background track with a toggle button for user control. A custom “firefly” cursor effect subtly echoes the forest ambience of the hero image, enhancing the sensory experience.

The project gallery introduces horizontal scrolling for a cinematic flow, while soft sound effects on hover bring tactile depth to navigation — turning each interaction into a small moment of play.

Design Decisions

Audio Integration

Because music and sound design are at the core of Justin’s work, the website treats sound as a primary design element. Each layer of interactivity — from hover effects to transitions — was carefully tuned to complement his compositions rather than distract from them.

Interactivity & Build

The site features looping background music with a user-controlled toggle, and a custom “firefly” cursor that echoes the forest ambience of the hero image. A horizontal project gallery adds a filmic flow, while hover-triggered sound effects transform each interaction into a small, playful performance.

Color Palette & Typography

A dark theme grounded in deep forest greens reflects Justin’s ambient and mystical aesthetic. Subtle glows and hover highlights evoke the feeling of light filtering through a forest canopy — moody, cinematic, and atmospheric.

The choice of Grenze Gotisch as the primary typeface reinforces Justin’s distinct creative style — vintage, atmospheric, and stylised. Its ornamental character adds depth and texture to the site, visually mirroring the layered quality of his soundscapes.

Development

I built and coded the site from scratch, ensuring it performed smoothly across devices. The final version was deployed on GitHub Pages and connected to Justin’s custom domain.

Result & Reflection

The new site has significantly boosted engagement and inquiries. It now serves as a cohesive portfolio and storytelling platform — one that resonates with Justin’s target audience and captures the soul of his audio craft.
